SA Menswear Week AW18: Will the real Rosey and Vittori please stand up?

February 12, 2018

Who are Rosey and Vittori?

Not the people but the brand. Their AW18 show at SA Menswear Week revealed very little of an original and cohesive collection. We saw Gucci’s snake and Kenzo’s eye. Even a Balenciaga-style Bazar Shopper with Gucci straps, and snake, tiger and floral badges. We saw palm prints, oriental prints, velvet and snow-washed denim.

It looked diabolical!

Luminance Trunk Show at the V&A Waterfront

April 25, 2013

“Names, darling. Gimme names!” is one of my favourite lines from Brit sit-com, Absolutely Fabulous.

Designer-Labels-01Well darlings, I’m happy to announce the V&A Waterfront has all these names. Oscar de la Renta. Stella McCartney. Alexander McQueen. Marc Jacobs. Diane von Furstenberg, Nicholas Kirkwood. And then some.

But only until Sunday!

See, on Wednesday evening I popped into The Forum; the conference hall of the Victoria & Alfred Hotel for the opening of the Luminance trunk show.

IMG_4614Now, you may remember Khanyi Dhlomo as that newsreader with the most beautiful skin in Africa who was on SABC then went onto CNN. Well she’s a little bit more than that.

Khanyi, whose name means ‘light’ is the CEO of Ndalo Media and founder of Destiny Magazine. I know. Busy lady. Anyhoo, after a long stint in Paris, she realised us Saffa’s don’t really have access to a host of couture designers. The lady felt our pain.

So like any self-respecting business woman worth her weight in Loubi’s, Khanyi started a luxury designer clothing store. And so Luminance was born; first online and now for realsies.

It’s a one-stop treasure chest carrying all the labels our hearts desire. *sigh* The store will launch in Hyde Park, Johannesburg on 17 July this year – yip, Jo’burg again. Til then, little pop-up shops around the country will be preening themselves like peacocks on heat, tempting us to buy, buy, buy. Like the one on Wednesday night.

My chat with Khanyi was too brief but long enough for me to scoop that she was wearing a Diane von Furstenberg dress with a Balenciaga leather biker jacket. Her black clutch was also DVF. Sorry, I didn’t check out her shoes as I was totally fixated on her incredible skin. So I got myself a little touch up at the Bobbi Brown makeup station…

and then went shopping. Ok, not really but a girl can dream. Wanna see what’s there?

I know. I know. I also wanted it all.

Ahead of the Luminance store grande opening on 17 July where you’ll also be introduced to their Private Label, here are the details for trunk shows in your area.

Johannesburg: 17 April-14 July, Upper Mall, Shop 36, Hyde Park Corner.
Cape Town: 25-28 April, Victoria & Alfred Hotel, On the Waterfront Pierhead.
Bloemfontein: 25-28 April, Protea Hotel Willow Lake, 101 Henry Street, Westdene.
Nelspruit: 2-5 May, La Villa Vita, 21 Klipspringer Street.
Durban: 22-26 May, Urban Park Hotel Umhlanga, 60 Meridian Drive, Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre.
Port Elizabeth: 23-26 May, No5 Boutique Art Hotel, 5 Brighton Drive, Summerstrand.
Polokwane: 30 May-2 June, Fusion Boutique Hotel, 4 Schoeman Street.
Pretoria: 6-9 June, 131 on Herbert Baker Boutique Hotel, 131 Herbert Baker Street, Groenkloof.

Now let me give you a little hint. Trunk shows or pop-up shops may not carry the latest collections but are designed to test the market. If Cape Town shows a resounding success in terms of sales figures, we’ll get Luminance to open here. If not, we don’t. A simple equation of supply and demand. So the onus is on you, style lovers. Get to the V&A Waterfront this weekend and shop til your credit cards glow red-hot. Or the only time we’ll ever see these labels again are on the catwalk. And in Jo’burg! We can’t have that.

Speaking of catwalks. My date for the evening was Cape Town couture designer Jacques Lagrange. You’ve heard of my brunches and lunches with him quite often.

Jacques wore a Lacoste Plo shirt, cashmer thrown casually aroind his shoulders. He's belt and shoes were Louis Vuitoon, his fave label. He styled me in my black Paige jeans and Loubi's. I got the vintage clutch from my sister. The deal was all black with only red lips, nails and soles.

Well, after hours of Champagne o’ clock at his kitchen table, he finally deemed me worthy to wear one of his creations. This French lace, hand-dyed and hand-beaded jacket with a silk organza belted bow (I had to say it all) debuted at the Pepper Club private viewing last year (he doesn’t do many big shows these days) – then walked the runway at Mozambique Fashion Week. I’m blessed and love him so much. Thank you, Jacques.

And a huge ol’ arm-punch thanks to Jill Grogor from Zebra Square who takes such good care of us bloggers.

Happy shopping, luxury lovers.
