Save the Date: 5 for Change Charity Ball

May 5, 2014

Save the Date!  On Saturday 31 May it’s the annual 5 For Change charity ball.

You’ll be treated to welcome drinks, canapés and entertainment by SA bands like The Kiffness with GQ Best Dressed Siv Ngesi as MC. In addition to big ticket items on auction, you can also bid on anything from a pair of sunglasses to a weekend getaway for two.

Jacques Lagrange and I at last year’s party, before the night went pear-shaped.

All I remember about last year’s party is designer Jacques Lagrange barking, ‘Do not pass out in a couture dress’, into my ear. Everything else is a blur so I guess his warning wasn’t headed. Karisa may also have played a part in rescuing me from the ladies’ room but like I said, hazy memories are all I have. And these awesome photos. (read about the night HERE)

5 for Change is more than a posh skop! in fancy threads. Founded in 2012 by three passionate young professionals, David Deetlefs, Adriaan Dippennar and Ross McKernan, this charity initiative aims to raise awareness about five inspiring social enterprises who are changing the way Cape Town gives back.

Forever New SS13 High Society launch

November 4, 2013

On Thursday night, Forever New presented their pretty spring party collection with a fashion show in-store at the V&A Waterfront. The evening, like the new collection, was themed High Society; reflecting the upcoming season of ladylike soirees and afternoon high tea.

The Forever New brand typifies middle American society. Think of it as being Gossip Girl’s poorer cousins and you’re in the right arena. In a brief chat with general manager, Wayne Jones, I was told that this collection celebrated Forever New’s signature piece; the dress.

This season, they’re whipped back to Palm Spring’s in the 50’s where femininity floated in sorbet colours, soft floral prints and delicate lace.

Defined by the statement neckline, the collection of dresses could carry you through all occassions from engagement parties to weddings to a elegant night out, perhaps even The Queen’s Plate horse racing event.

Handbags for day-and-eveningwear have been given a modern twist with hardware details while filigreed statement necklaces and delicate earrings continue to sparkle.

In my opinion, Forever New can best be described as sugary sweet. There’s nothing cutting edge about their look. Its all feminine and pretty; but then I guess not everyone’s the same.

Experience the sweet allure of High Society at all Forever New stores and select Edgars stores from October 2013.

Happy shopping, pretty ones

Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes 2013 launch

October 16, 2013

As if being spoiled with The Met and L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate isn’t enough, a third glamorous horse racing event will be gracing Cape Town.

The 1st Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes which runs on Saturday 23 November at Kenilworth Racecourse promises to open the racing season in style.

A new face in town; The Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes

Galia Kerbel from Greater Than PR along with race organizer, Cape Thoroughbred Sales hosted a media launch on the sprawling Lanzerace Wine Estate in Stellenbosch on Monday afternoon. And the ladies were there to take it all in. Tough life, I know.

Lanzerac Wine Estate Stellenbosch
Lanzerac Wine Estate, Hotel & Spa is situated at No 1 Lanzerac Road, Jonkers Valley Stellenbosch.

The hotel holds 48 en-suite rooms, each individually decorated and all feature a private patio and breathtaking views.

Rooms, restaurants, bars, lounges and spa facilities are set amidst dramatic mountain ranges, endless rows of lush vineyards and hectares of award-winning landscaped gardens.

In attendance were a whole whack of celebs like Expresso ‘guy-with-the-nicest-smile’ TV presenter Katlego Maboe, top Cape Town comedian Siv Ngesi, actress Lee-Anne Summers, milliners Dom & Kerri from The Little Hattery and my fave ladies, Leigh vd Berg and Karisa Nicholls.

Sjoe! Galia always manages to pull an impressive crowd.

Guests were served a sumptuous three-course meal prepared by resident executive chef Steven Frazier while MC for the day, the fun and fabulous Liezel vd Westhuizen, kept the afternoon ticking over nicely. Thank L, we don’t do long speeches.

The Lanzerac RTR sets itself apart from other horse racing events by promising to make horse ownership accessible.Ladies and gents, you’re buying a horse.

Carrying a price tag somewhere between a pair of Loubi ‘Pigalle’s’ and a VW Polo, you could watch your own equine beauty tear up the turf on race day.

Ok, so with annual insurance, vet’s bills, stabling, training fees, munchies and a jockey, you’re looking more in the Mercedes AMG price bracket but the dream is achievable-ish.

The Lanzerac RTR schedule looks something like this.
Between now and Tuesday 19 November: Bat your eyelashes like crazy at your bank roller manager to secure serious funds.
Wednesday 20 November: The horses arrive in Cape Town while you get some outfits sorted, visit the hair & nail salon etcetera, etcetera.
Thursday 21 November: A long day starts with breakfast at Durbanville Race course followed by the Gallops i.e. watch the ‘Future Stars’ run by.
Friday 22 November: Buy a horse and have some lunch; again at Durbanville Racecourse
Saturday 23 November: Join the R2m Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes at Kenilworth Racecourse – and pray your investment places.

After lunch, I headed back to Cape Town making a mental note to phone Jacques Lagrange before he heads off to Paris for Christmas. I need a new outfit for the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes. Perhaps something which matches Lee-Anne’s shoes. I loved them.

I want Lee-Anne's shoes.
Wanted!

To Galia and the team at Greater Than PR, it was good seeing you again. Thank you for a luxurious Monday afternoon.

See you at the races, glam queens.

FHM sexiest woman in the world 2013 party

June 18, 2013

Here we are standing in front of the official FHM wall; sitting on a bench and then posing with two of the sexiest women in the world.

FHM-Party-05
My fabulous crew (l) with Dene Botha who MC’ed the event (top r) Karisa Nicholls, Bjorn Steinbach & Leigh vd Berg. (bottom r) They’re both leaving me soon. *sad face* Leigh is heading off to San Tropez again! and Karisa’s heading off to traipse around Europe for like, forever. Ok, only three months but it will feel like forever.
FHM-Party-08
(l) Leigh & I with make-up artist & actress Carishma who made it into the FHM Top 100 and (r) Karisa with Simone de Kock who placed 10th.

How hot is Dene in that C Squared suit? Sadly, I have to admit the rest of the evening wasn’t the most glitzy of affairs. I suppose it was all about the ladies in the magazine which didn’t quite carry our names – hence the little camera poses of ourselves. See, on Saturday evening we hit up thee FHM Sexiest Woman in the World 2013 party. You’d think Whoop! Wow! Holy Moly! right? Hmmm, lets see.

It was held at the Woodstock Exchange; an open air shopping mall in er… Woodstock. Yip. Winter plus fresh air plus skimpy dresses equals fur-reeezing cold. I bundled up in tights and a leather jacket. Ain’t no way I could compete with the sexiest women in the world so I went for comfort and warmth instead. Everyone else either froze their noombies off or huddled under heaters.

Oh, I have to say the stage performances were pretty cool. The burlesque show was wicked. And I may just be a new fan of local all-girl indie rock band The Dollfins. Loved their Doc Martens. And the chocolate brownies were to die for.

FHM-Party-01
(l) oh la la. (r) The Dollfins rocking some killer toonz and Doc Martens
FHM-Party-03
If all else fails, at least you have your friends… and chocolate! Cheers ya’ll.

Whining aside, I had to remind myself why we were here. To celebrate the fact that South Africa has the hottest women in the world. Seven in the top ten and I lost count of how many in total. As for the winner. Yip, SA’s very own Melinda Bam is the FHM Sexiest Woman in the World 2013. No surprise considering she’s is an ex Miss South Africa and a Miss Universe entrant.

FHM-Party-06
Editor Brendan Cooper with FHM Sexiest Woman in the World 2013, Melinda Bam. How amazing in that onesie.

I’m almost tempted to wish that she had like four toes on one foot or a third nipple or something. Simply because, not only she she incredible beautiful and uber hot but also the sweetest person ever. Am I jealous that she could pull of a cream lace onesie in sub-zero temperature.? Actually not; because she is so damn nice.  Well chosen FHM!

Not content with all the pics we had taken earlier, we grabbed a few more as we left, astride someone’s scooter. See if you can spot Leigh taking a selfie in the background. Cute:-)

FHM-Party-07
“Stay there, you look like Rihanna.” LOL! Those were Bjorn’s words. #TrueStory. He’s such a sweet liar but we love him.

So that was the FHM party. But before I sign out, let me spare a thought for Pete Luvsapeep. I haven’t heard from him in a while but I’ll guess he’s wondering where the hotties are. Well Pete, I got this snazzy flash drive in my goodie bag…

FHM-Party-09
My gift to Pete Luvsapeep

… which unfortunately didn’t contain any promo pics. So you’ll have to contend with the shots I’ve taken from the magazine. Cheers to the SA girls who made it into the top 10.

Urban Beauty Spa Winter launch

June 4, 2013

Beautiful. Beautiful. Boo-tiful! That pretty much sums up my evening at the Urban Beauty spa. I was there last Thursday for their Winter launch.

Housed in the lavish Queen Victoria Hotel in Portswood Road at The V&A Waterfront, Urban Beauty has been around for a while so this wasn’t like a launch launch.

Owner Claudia van Rooyen and her bestie Natalie Becker, who hosted the event, had us over for a soiree to introduce the Winter menu, showcase some products and celebrate the clients who frequent this haven. Sweet:-)

The hotel smelled like heaven thanks to strategically placed candles. It sounded like heaven because of a string quartet discretely positioned in one corner. And judging by the mountain of Lindt balls perched on the bar counter, Elrico and I can lay testament to the evening tasting like heaven, too.

So, with a glass of bubbles in hand, amazing butternut & beetroot canapes and snoek pate in tummy and few balls in my handbag, I got to hear about the business dynamo which is Claudia.

In a nutshell, this woman is focussed, confident and successful. She comfortably lays claim to the fact that you’ve never had a back and neck massage, until you’ve experienced one from her. Brave claim which unfortunately I couldn’t put to the test. Her spa ladies were er… handing out hand massages but I was too busy making friends those Lindt balls. And bonding with my crew, which is always a pleasure.

Now, onto business. I learned that Urban Beauty have positioned themselves specifically as… wait for … an Anti-Aging practice. Ooh la la, big claim. Well remember I mentioned Claudia’s confidence. Well, part if comes from using some of the best anti-aging products around; Nimue and QMS.

I’m no expert in this field but I learned that both these brands work on a scientific level to fight the signs of aging, repair skin damage and prolong youth through the use of collagen. People, that is the magic ingredient to youth. Collagen! It’a is a protein which connects tissue, bone, cartilage etc. The body reduces production of this magic potion normally from the age of 35  [Insert profane exclamation of despair here] hence the formation of wrinkles.

(Photo from Urban Beauty)
(Photo from Urban Beauty)

Every beauty routine needs to include a mother lode dose of collagen to slow down the aging process. In addition to a healthy intake of this protein, you need the great guns like Nimue and QMS as opposed to cheap off-the-shelf stuff.

I have to contend that Urban Beauty facials are a bit pricey. We’re talking R750 for a Classic Collagen Treatment; and R2150 for a Skin Cell Renewal Treatment. Yip, a bit much for us ordinary folk. But I leave you this one thought. No collagen. No good. The end.

IMG_5287

IMG_5288

Unless you’re a belly dance like the one we oohed and aahed at on the night. With hips that don’t lie, who’ll be looking at your wrinkles:-)

To Natalie, Claudia, all the spa ladies and that mountain of Lindt balls, thanks for a beautiful evening.

Happy pampering, everyone
love & light
